A very attractive, well made and fine quality unused antique book slip cover, c. 1890's -
1910; dating to the late Victorian to early Edwardian era.
Exterior cover is decorated with fine Bargello needlepoint embroidery, also called Florentine work and Flame stitch. The floss is extremely soft and smooth and I believe it is silk; colors included cream, gold and several rich brown shades.
The edge is trimmed with an interesting dark gold silk piping that appears to be interwoven with a gold metallic textured metal strand.
Interior features a wonderful yellow gold silk lining, with pockets to hold front and back book covers.
This attractive old textile book cover appears to be unused. It is in exceptionally nice antique estate condition, with no rips, tears, holes, wear, distress, stains, damage, etc. There are two very tiny pencil point size smudges, located very close to each other on one side of interior silk pocket. These are the only noted issues and appear to be possibly light pencil smudges. Really very minor and insignificant for an antique textile and likely removable. Please see last image.
The book cover does have a nice body/structure to it, that is to say it is not limp like a fabric cover would be, yet it remains quite pliable, not overly hard or stiff, seemingly in original condition, exactly as made 100 years ago.
Slip covers were popular period gift items, intended to be used to protect those cherished books, bibles, missals and other tomes. They are becoming rather difficult to find, especially fine textile examples.
