SILVER, ESTATE > FLATWARE

Material:  Silverplate, Antler
Size:  Knife Length ~ apx. 14 & 1/8 inches
         Fork Length ~ 10 & 3/4 inches
         Box  Length ~ 15 & ½ inches, Width ~ 4 & 7/8 inches, Height ~ 1 & ½ inches
Maker:  Unknown
Hallmarks:  EPNS
Date:  1880 - 1910
Quantity:  1 three piece set = box, fork, knife

A large antique silverplate fish serving set found in the original presentation case and dating to the later Victorian to  Edwardian era, c. 1880 - 1910.
The extremely large knife features a beautifully pierced blade that is also elaborately engraved with an aesthetic floral and foliage decoration.  The fork is pierced and engraved, as well, albeit not as ornately. Both servers are fitted with very attractive stag antler handles, topped with fancy bulbous, crown shaped end caps.
The set appears to have had little use, presenting very well, with no apparent wear to the silver plate whatsoever.  The antler handles also present very well, with wonderful rich patina.  The handles fit snug and tight, remaining very solid and secure.
There are a couple of small, naturally occurring surface fissures/cracks to the antlers, only one of which we were able to capture digitally using high magnification and is shown in image #7.  This manner of inclusion is to be expected in very old natural material of this type, and does not affect the integrity of the handles, but is rather a simple cosmetic issue that is often blended/smoothed with certain easily obtained, inexpensive fillers if desired, however we will leave that choice to buyer, as purists may prefer to leave the antler in it's natural state.
The original fitted box is structurally very sound, with just some wrinkles and scuffs to the black leather exterior.  The purple silk velvet and silk satin interior remains in excellent condition, with vibrant rich color and no apparent distress or deterioration of fabric commonly found in period textiles.  Hinges and clasp both operate well, seeming as new, with no noted issues.
Although maker is unknown the set displays great similarity to a known Mappin & Webb Sheffield example of same age.
Overall a really fine antique fish set, with attractive pierced and engraved decoration typical of the Art Nouveau period.
