Rare Set of 8 Antique John Wendt RIBBON Large Sterling Silver Ice Cream Spoons c. 1870 ~ No Monogram!

Rare Set of 8 Antique John Wendt RIBBON Large Sterling Silver Ice Cream Spoons c. 1870 ~ No Monogram!

Maker:  Whiting / Gorham
Hallmark:  Sterling,  Roehm & Chittenden

Size:  Length varies ~ 6 & 1/4 to 9 inches;  see below for individual serving piece specifics
Quantity:  1 Set = 5 pcs Sterling +  Box & Note

A wonderful large antique five piece sterling silver dessert serving set complete with original presentation box, manufactured by Gorham Whiting in the Alhambra pattern, c. 1880's.

The pieces are as follows:

1)  9 inch berry spoon

1)  8 & 5/8 inch all sterling pie server

1)  9 inch pudding spoon (slightly narrower and shallower bowl than the same length berry spoon)

1)  6 & 1/4 inch sugar sifter ladle ~ spoon

1)  7 inch preserve spoon

Our research indicates that this pattern was never offered as a complete line, so while none of these pieces could be considered common, several of the servers included in this set are actually rather rare and quite hard to find, especially the preserve spoon, the pierced sifter and the large pudding spoon, which has a slightly narrower and more shallow bowl than the same length berry serving spoon.

Each of the pieces is hallmarked sterling, along with various numbers and the retailers' name; Roehm & Chittenden. These serving pieces do not additionally reflect the Whiting hallmark, which is very common for early Whiting examples.

With the exception of the pie server, all of the pieces feature heavy gold wash gilt bowls.  The all sterling silver pie server, while not gilded, does feature a very fancy brite cut aesthetic design to the serving blade.  See image #5. The sifter is also very ornate, with a shell shaped, scalloped, fluted and beautifully pierced bowl.

Serving piece handles are lightly monogrammed;  Esther.

All of the pieces in this set are in exceptionally fine estate condition.  We see no dings or dents and the parcel gilt remains very bright and shiny, with just a hint of smoothing to finest pattern detail on spoon backs where they rest in the satin lined box.   Handles retain original shape and the fancy, ornate pattern design remains quite crisp and defined indicating that these pieces have likely been used very little.

The blue satin interior lining does show some scuffs and thinning around the serving piece handle holders, as well as a few marks and some dust.  See image #1.  Retailers name is marked in gold lettering inside lid; Roehm & Chittenden ~ Detroit.

The original box appears to have a leather covered exterior and there are some scuffs and scratches, but otherwise the box is in sound condition; hinges and hidden closure latch work well.

A very old handwritten note providing historical provenance was found enclosed in the box. See image #11.  The message indicates the set was to become the property of Ben ____ (undecipherable).  Sounds like it was possibly being bequeathed to this individual.  The written message continues with information that the set originally belonged to Esther Chase Smith; (as confirmed per monogram) and was received by her as a wedding gift.  Below Esther’s name is a date of October 24, 1871, possibly a date of birth?   The note will be included with set.

A 130+ year old Victorian serving set, in exceptionally fine condition, complete with original presentation box...truly a wonderful, rare find.
