Size: Length varies ~ 6 & 1/4 to 9 inches; see below for individual serving piece specificsQuantity: 1 Set = 5 pcs Sterling + Box & Note
All of the pieces in this set are in exceptionally fine estate condition. We see no dings or dents and the parcel gilt remains very bright and shiny, with just a hint of smoothing to finest pattern detail on spoon backs where they rest in the satin lined box. Handles retain original shape and the fancy, ornate pattern design remains quite crisp and defined indicating that these pieces have likely been used very little. The blue satin interior lining does show some scuffs and thinning around the serving piece handle holders, as well as a few marks and some dust. See image #1. Retailers name is marked in gold lettering inside lid; Roehm & Chittenden ~ Detroit.
The original box appears to have a leather covered exterior and there are some scuffs and scratches, but otherwise the box is in sound condition; hinges and hidden closure latch work well.
A very old handwritten note providing historical provenance was found enclosed in the box. See image #11. The message indicates the set was to become the property of Ben ____ (undecipherable). Sounds like it was possibly being bequeathed to this individual. The written message continues with information that the set originally belonged to Esther Chase Smith; (as confirmed per monogram) and was received by her as a wedding gift. Below Esther’s name is a date of October 24, 1871, possibly a date of birth? The note will be included with set.
A 130+ year old Victorian serving set, in exceptionally fine condition, complete with original presentation box...truly a wonderful, rare find.
