Material:  Coin Silver

Maker:  Henry Hebbard
Hallmark:
HH Patent 1859, #3, Ford Tupper & Behan

Size:  Length ~ 10  &  5/8 inches, Bowl ~ 3  &  3/4  x  3 inches
Quantity:  1

This is a very fine large antique coin silver ladle manufactured by Henry Hebbard in the Mask pattern, c.1850's.

Henry Hebbard is listed as an important early American silversmith, active in New York,  c. 1847 - 1869.   Research shows that Hebbard patented a number of coin and sterling flatware patterns, which he retailed through his own store, as well as produced for Tiffany and Company.   Hebbard was also involved in a number of partnerships, most notably with George Strong, Edward Moore, and John Polhemus, who was also associated with George W. Shiebler.

This size ladle is between the soup and punch ladle in size and although it can be used for either purpose, it is called an Oyster ladle.   It has been our experience that the Oyster ladle in particular is usually the rarest and hardest to find size in most patterns.

This ladle features a beautifully formed and proportioned very substantial handle, with big, deep, generous bowl.  Bowl reverse is decorated with a fancy design replicated from upper handle.
Please ignore ~ waviness ~ on handle reverse in third image - this is just reflection of our ceiling and light fixture....the back of this ladle is perfectly smooth and free of damage, monograms and/or removals.

The ladle is extremely well made of very heavy gauge Coin silver, with a considerable weight of 5 troy ounces.

According to numerous reference books, including Collecting American 19th Century Silver by Katharine McClinton, as well as The Official Identification and Price Guide To Silver by Jeri Schwartz, plus other online sources, Coin Silver, which was commonly used by early American silversmiths prior to the designated 1861 sterling standard, was 900 parts silver.  This is just slightly less than the 925 adopted later, however it is still very high quality silver and substantially higher purity than commonly used in other parts of the world during the period.
Condition of this antique server is exceptionally nice; we see no dings, dents or damage.   Amazingly the pattern design remains quite defined as we hope you can see in the close up images.

The ladle is not monogrammed with initials, letters, or names, etc.  Upper handle is adorned with an opulent early Victorian Art Nouveau floral and foliage crest type design.  (as mentioned above:  please ignore appearance of  waviness on handle reverse in fourth image - this is reflection of our ceiling and light fixture....the back of ladle is perfectly smooth and free of damage)

This is an exceptionally nice condition large antique ladle, made by a very important early manufacturer of sterling and coin silver; noted for outstanding quality and produced flatware for Tiffany & Co.
