This large antique late Victorian or early Edwardian gold gilt metal chain link ring
mesh purse, c. 1895 - 1915, features a nice floral and vine embossed frame, as well
as very fancy diamond shape fringe. (sorry, tiny links did not photo well)
The purse is not marked as to origin, so we are unsure of maker.
This mesh is the early ring style, often used on the French gunmetal and German silver
period examples. It is smooth and silky, yet feels more substantial and well made,
as well as somewhat heavier than the later finer mesh types like Dresden and baby
fine; no lining.
This purse is in very nice estate condition. I examined the links with a magnifying
glass and believe that every single link remains securely in place around entire
frame perimeter. Links are also quite close up around the hinges. There is definitely
no large gap between hinge and links, as is commonly seen on old mesh bags. There
may be one bent link apx. mid body; when mesh is spread out from inside there is
a very tiny, apx. 1 millimeter space, no roughness or sharpness and only detectable
if looking closely down into purse with mesh completely expanded. Diamond shaped
fringe appears to be in excellent condition, with no noted losses or sharp edges,
etc. Nice oval link chain handle.
Gold gilt on the lovely floral and vine embossed frame remains amazingly intact and
free of oxidation. There is the expected gilt wear to kiss clasp, as well as a
slight/minor amount to gilt on mesh in immediate proximity.
Hinges operate very well, as does kiss style clasp, which aligns well and snaps securely
shut. All parts appear to be original.
A very nice early gilt ring mesh bag.
