This is a really wonderful antique or earlier vintage hornback alligator Gladstone suitcase or portmanteau, dating from the turn of the century Edwardian era, to the 1920s.
It is a rather unusual, slightly smaller and harder to find size, in that the larger 18, 20 inch and larger bags, while still scarce, are seemingly more common.  This interesting bag measures apx. 15 inches long, 7 inches wide and 9 inches tall.  Not as heavy and cumbersome as the larger sizes and perfect for a day valise, overnight case, or travel carryall.
This particular Gladstone would have been one of the more expensive available back in the day, as it features the wonderful raised hornback alligator skin on both the front and back,
as well as both sides/ends.  The matching skin covered padded handle, nice brass fittings, substantial frame and excellent fine smooth leather interior lining are all additional indicators of fine, high quality craftsmanship.
The bag is in exceptionally nice antique / vintage estate condition.  The rich brown alligator skin remains in very nice condition, with no noted rips, tears or breaks and it does not feel dry, or brittle.  As expected for a possibly 100 year old piece of luggage there are some scuffs and light wear to the corners and side edgings, however this does not effect integrity.  The handle is also showing some fairly minor use, mainly to one lower area near the brass connector ring, where there is some slight separation of the skins, see close up image #3.  Probably a small amount of appropriate adhesive would remedy.
The interior leather remains quite nice, with no rips or tears and still feels soft and smooth, like kid, or similar high quality.  It is quite clean with no significant stains, just some general slight darkening from use, mainly near upper frame area.  The interior leather was at one time personalized, but all that remains legible is Walla Walla Wash (Washington) with scuffing/wear to an additional line of lettering below that, possibly a name?  See interior image #6, upper middle area, above double pockets.  This is just a cosmetic issue that I feel is quite insignificant, however if desired it could probably be made less notable with a simple, appropriate leather treatment.
Really a very nice condition antique gladstone travel case, in a desirable slightly smaller size than often found and similar in style and shape to the Victorian era alligator and crocodile bags carried by doctor's, nurses and medical professionals.  Today these bags are extremely popular with discriminating connoisseurs of unique high quality luggage, as well as interior designers and decorators.
