          length ~ 6 yards available

Quantity:  SOLD PER YARD & cut to order in 1 continuous piece

A divine and quite hard to find antique passementerie trim.  Unfortunately the types of looms that made these wider antique jacquard ribbons are now a thing of the past, so finding unused old yardage like this is truly a treasure.

This particular example is woven silk, most likely made in France during the later part of the 19th century. At the time of listing we have six yards of this wonderful trim available and it is sold by the yard.

The weave is a brocade, meaning that the reverse shows a mirror image of the front.  Due to the white on white color palette, while the ribbon was intended to be single faced, aesthetically it appears as a double faced ribbon; in other words, virtually the same on both sides, making it very versatile.  As you can hopefully see in the images, especially image #4, the weaving technique created alternating areas of matte and sheen, which reflect the light differently, imparting a very three dimensional aesthetic to the pattern.

The pattern motif features an opulent oak leaf and acorn design on an ornate basket weave ground, with very fancy border detail.  In the 19th century flowers, plants and herbs all held special meanings and could convey certain messages.  Referred to then as the "Language of Flowers", but the symbolic use of, and interest in the subject goes back to early Greek and Roman civilizations.  Accordingly, oak leaves and acorns have been symbolically significant and important to many countries and cultures for hundreds, even thousands of years, often signifying strength, power, authority, nobility, leadership, honor, bravery and victory, as well as faith, virtue, prosperity, fruitfulness and longevity.  Rulers frequently wore oak leaf crowns and the symbol continues to be used today by many countries, governments, political parties and religious orders.  During the period this very high quality embellishment would likely have been reserved for only the finest applications, such as utilized by the church and clergy for vestment and ecclesiastical purposes.

This passementerie ribbon is in exceptionally nice antique estate condition.  We find no deterioration or similar issues frequently found on older silk based textiles.  This is a thicker, substantial and intricately woven ribbon; see close up image #4.  It is very strong, sturdy, stable and clean.  I previously noted a tiny smudge at one edge, however I have since been unable to locate it, but it may be there, just faint and hard to detect.  Really wonderful old embellishment, that would be a great addition to a special ribbon or textile collection.

Authentic Victorian and Edwardian trims are becoming harder to find, especially high quality French examples, with continuous long lengths of yardage such as this certainly somewhat rare.  If you collect antique and vintage ribbons and passementerie trims this unused NOS French embellishment is appropriate for special applications such as clothing, millinery, boudoir vanity items, pillows, soft furnishings, interior design, window coverings, period restorations and other important projects.

NOTE:  Ribbon sold in one yard increments.  Yardage will be cut to order in one continuous length, as possible.
***Also, while it is our policy to be quite generous when measuring yardage, for this particular ribbon we only have exactly 6 yards and 1 inch available, so any cut yardage will, by necessity, be cut very precisely.

ORDERING DETAILS:  The minimum quantity for purchase is one yard, which is shown in the white Quantity box below, however if you desire a different amount of yardage simply edit the number displayed in the white QUANTITY box below by typing the required number of yards, from 2 to 6 and then click the ADD TO CART Button.  The appropriate total for your selected amount of yardage will be calculated and shown on the resulting Invoice.
