Divine antique silk organza, or mousseline de soie in French.

The fabric is finely woven, yet very sheer and translucent, with beautiful luster and a crisp finish.  Typical of the period this original yardage has not been dyed and remains the natural silk color, although it may have darkened somewhat over the years.  We would describe the present shade as a darker cream with a slight silvery hue.

We have a small bolt of this wonderful old narrow fabric, measuring a continuous seven plus yards in length and it is being sold by the yard.   Today it is quite uncommon and somewhat rare to find unused bolts of this fine old silk.

It is embroidered in a fancy floral and foliage motif with flowers and swags bordering lower edge.  Please see our fourth image for scale information.

The yardage is in very good antique estate condition.
Finely woven selvage edges intact the length of textile.
Typical of this type of sheer translucent silk some slubs and minor original and weaving flaws can be found intermittently, like the narrow “seam” shown next to the gray pen in image #5.  Also found, two tiny, apx. ¼ inch (apx. 5mm) separations in the weave at the very edge of the embroidered flower design.  (not noted until after photographing)
This yardage does show some tiny intermittent pin holes here and there, (see example indicated by red pen, image #5)  with one small area apx. 1.5  inch in diameter showing a small cluster of about 11 tiny holes; the largest measuring about 4 mm, or pencil point size, surrounded by smaller dots.  We thought to just cut the yardage and remove a one inch strip, creating two lengths of yardage, but decided to leave as is and just include extra yardage for whoever purchases this section, to allow for a seam or pleating, etc.
Regardless of these fairly minor cosmetic issues the yardage is overall very strong and stable, easily passing the standard silk “tug and pull” test.
The fabric has likely darkened somewhat with age, currently presenting a slightly silvery/grayish cream, however this would likely brighten to close to the original hue with a gentle soak.

During the later Victorian and Edwardian periods this type of fine silk fabric was often gathered and layered as flouncing to make the lovely skirts, tea / afternoon dresses and wedding / evening gowns so popular at the time.  Today it can be used in numerous similar applications, including clothing and lingerie, as well as millinery, boudoir vanity items, French Fashion & Bebe doll dressing & accessories, pillows, interior design, soft furnishings, restorations and other projects requiring authentic period textiles.

NOTE:  Yardage sold in one yard increments; cut to order in one continuous length as possible.

ORDERING DETAILS:  If you wish to purchase more than one yard, which is the minimum purchase, please type the desired number of yards, from 2 to 7, in the white QUANTITY Box below and then click the ADD TO CART Button. The appropriate total for your selected amount of yardage will be calculated and shown on the resulting Invoice.
