Divine Original Card of Matching Antique Cream Silk Thread Wrapped Death Head 19th Century Passementerie Leek Dressmaker Buttons

Material:  silk, wood
Color:  cream silk
Size:  apx. 10 mm, = apx. 7/16 inch
Age:  19th century, 1820 - 1850s
Quantity:  1 set = 6 matching buttons on card

A rare find of six antique 19th century handmade needleworked cream silk twift devil or death head buttons, sometimes also referred to as:  death's head, deathshead, deathhead.

These divine examples are found unused, new old stock, on the original card.  Quite a rare and unique historical artifact, considering there really are few surviving period examples in this NOS condition remaining today. (some appear slightly grubby in the images, but this must be reflection, etc, as all are clean & bright)

A form of Leek button; after Leek, England, which was known for centuries as a center for the button industry.  This type of decorative closure was commonly used during the 18th and 19th centuries, and according to our research seemingly most prevalent from the early to mid 1800s when this cottage industry of making handmade buttons was at its zenith.  Originally used mainly for men's garments, such as waistcoats, vests and jackets, etc., but later regularly used by dressmakers in similar garments for women, as well.  Interestingly, for many centuries the style, design and material a button was made of would have been indicative of social class, affluence, position and/or occupation, as well as a number of other aspects of an individual’s life.  Rather hard to image today that such a small, seemingly trivial and utilitarian item could have been so important and significant, with the ability to convey such a vast amount of information.

The buttons feature a domed wood base over which a silk thread is worked in a four quartered pattern, forming an "X" where the segments meet;  purportedly reminding our ancestors of a skull and cross bones formation, and/or as noted during early times, the balancing of the four humors/humours of the body.

The buttons remain in unused, very good antique estate condition, appearing structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing, with the subtle rich sheen of silk.  We see no stains, wear, fading, or other issues. The buttons are individually hand made, so if examined minutely slight differences can be seen, as expected, however they are very well matched, with good color consistency.
They are attached to what we believe to be the original display card, which was apparently cut in half at some earlier date. (we acquired the buttons exactly as shown)  This section of card initially held 12 buttons, but currently retains six, attached via a silk or linen thread sewn through the back of each button and looped through the small round card opening.
The card stock shows some fairly minor smudges and soiling to front, as shown in the images above, however the cardboard back, which we overlooked photographing, has darkened fairly evenly overall with age, with some additional discoloration at the extreme edges, plus two small light pencil marks.  If image of card back is required, please email us via contact link in menu at page top.

A rare card of antique deaths head buttons that would surely enhance any antique fabric, textile, or needlework button collection.  This small size could also work well for French Fashion and Bebe doll dressing and similar applications.
