What a divine long length of antique handmade linen Hungarian bobbin lace!

Although somewhat difficult to date, as this lace has been made in Hungary (in the mid 1800’s this region was recognized as the Austrian Hungarian Empire ) for hundreds of years, the mid 1800’s is a close approximation, possibly earlier or slightly later.

The natural cream color linen lace has been worked in a floral pattern with multitudes of fat leaf talleys, indicating a skilled lace maker.  The  fine lace is attached to a very nice one inch wide linen header.  Both the linen header and the lace are finished on the ends.  See third image.
This yardage is in overall extremely nice antique estate condition.

When I acquired the lace it was clean and pressed as you see it now, free of spots, stains, and soil, etc.   It came carefully stored on a roll, where I believe it had been for many, many years, so there are no weak spots from folds, bends, etc.  The lace feels strong, yet remains soft and supple.  Obviously there are many brides, so as with similar lace it may be considered delicate to some degree, but it is not fragile and could easily be used today.
After examining the lace very closely I counted approximately four possibly broken brides and eight that I believe are just detached.  Please see black circle near header in last image for example.  Nothing large or glaring, but expect to find some small areas as aforementioned. Also, there are some tiny, barely larger than pin head size dark tan/light brownish specks scattered intermittently
on the linen header.  It is not unusual to find other bits of organic material in natural linen, especially antique, often hand woven fabric, so I am not sure if these specks are organic or otherwise.  They are not substantial, or really obvious however, and I do not find any specks on the lace itself, so I consider this quite inconsequential, yet mentioned so interested parties are aware of any/all noted issues, as is our policy.
In my humble opinion both condition notes referenced above are minor considerations, really, for a long length of handmade lace yardage that is likely more than 150 years old.

It is hard to know with any certainty in what manner this lace may have been used in past centuries, but I recently saw a similar length, not quite as deep as this example, that was museum catalogued as an alter piece.   It has also been suggested that the lace may have decorated a window valance or bed skirt on an antique wall/corner bed.  Today it could be used for many similar home decorating projects, as well as antique costuming, or for adding an authentic element to reenactment fashions.

Certainly a more rare and hard to find example of fine, high quality, antique 19th century handmade Hungarian linen bobbin lace.  Obviously made by an extremely talented and skilled lace maker, this example would make an important addition to a discriminating lace collection.
