A wonderful example of antique American Renaissance Battenburg Needlelace; likely more than 100 years old and dating to the early 1900's, Edwardian - Teens era.
This high quality lace, crafted by an experienced lacemaker, features excellent workmanship and a complex design.   The fancy, intricate and elaborate pattern incorporates five varieties of ribbon, accented with attractive large rose motif medallion fillings and finished with a beautiful scallops.
Except for the difference in length, both pieces of lace are identical.  Each features finely finished edges/sides (no raw edges) as can be seen in the second image.
It has been suggested that this lace may have originally been designed for a gown featuring a paneled or split hem, with one section being slightly wider than the other, as can be seen with the tunics, overskirts and paneled gowns of the Edwardian era.  Tiered flounces and ruffles, accenting the waist and hips, popular in the teens, is another possibility.
This lace is in amazingly fine antique estate condition and does not appear to have ever been used or washed.  It was obviously well cared for and well stored, as I find no damage, breaks, snags, holes, weakness, distress, etc.  Other than one pencil point size light discoloration near one end of the shorter piece  I find no stains, spots or similar issues.  This lace is very soft, with beautiful drape.  It appears to be strong, stable and very useable.
A desirable, harder to find and exceptionally nice example of period handmade American Renaissance Battenburg needle lace, executed by a talented lacemaker in a complex and aesthetically pleasing design.  Certainly collectible for condition and rarity, but also very useable for period costumes, passementerie for wedding attire and christening gowns, dolls, as well as a multitude of other special purposes.  This lace is sure to please even the most discriminating collector.

Provenance:  The lace was purchased from the living West Coast estate of an elderly women who inherited many high quality antique lace, linens and textiles from wealthy ancestors.  The collection was quite International, with fine examples from Ireland, Italy, Belgium, France and other European locations, as well as this early American Renaissance Battenburg.
