Fine Very Large Handmade Ornate Vintage Needlelace Linen Tablecloth

Material:  Linen

Size:  110 x 62
Quantity:  1

This very large vintage tablecloth is a fine example of handmade needlelace, c. 1920 - 40's.

Similar needle lace was made in various countries, including Belgium, Italy and Ireland to list a few, so sans tags exact attribution is difficult, however we believe the cloth is probably Italian merletti, Venetian Point de Venice, with Reticella elements.

I regularly see large cloths such as this referred to as banquet size.  I personally reserve that designation for tablecloths of slightly larger dimension, but by anyone standards this is an extremely large lace tablecloth!

It is well made from really nice quality medium to heavy weight linen.  The color is frequently referred to as ecru, however the exact shade of this tablecloth is not the typical dark ecru, but rather a lighter tone of natural linen, that could also be called cream., or warm off-white, which I think more accurately describes the true color.  Please see our last close up image below for best color representation.
The design is extremely attractive, with three large center floral medallions, accented with garlands and extra fancy corner decorations.

We took a number of photographs in an attempt to show the nice quality and  construction, however this detail was difficult to capture.  The raised cordonnett outlining gives the cloth a rich, three dimensional look that is instantly recognizable by those familiar with this type of fine needlelace.
This cloth was clean when acquired, however it had been stored for many years, so I carefully washed and pressed it, checking for problems as I ironed.  This took quite awhile and provided a lengthy opportunity for examination, because this is one very large tablecloth!  I am happy to report that I found no rips, tears, holes or broken brides. With this much detail it is possible I missed one, but I do not believe so. I did, however find one single bride that had been repaired, right near the edge.    It really should be reinforced with a slightly thicker thread, but it serves the purpose and is by no means easily discernable.  The tablecloth also appears to be free of stains, however under really bright, direct light (ie: examining outside, or holding up in front of a window with direct sun) very subtle shade differences can be detected here and there if scrutinized really closely.  I believe this is due to the natural variation in the linen itself, which is commonly seen, but age, use, washing, etc. could also contribute.  Again, this is extremely minor and really only detectable under the conditions outlined above.  The linen is strong and very durable, with no weak or worn spots.

This is certainly a beautiful, nice quality vintage lace tablecloth.  It is clean, pressed and ready to cherished, used and enjoyed for years to come.
