Material: Linen, double damask
Color:  White, hint of cream
Size:  31.75 inches x 31.25 inches
Monogram:  fancy/undetermined ~ 5 inches x 3.50 inches
Quantity:  1 Set = 8 napkins

A hard to find large set of 8 matching antique white linen napkins, likely French in origin, c. 1880 - 1900 Victorian period.

At 31 & 3/4 inches x 31 & 1/4 inches they are extremely generous large dinner, or banquet size napkins, often referred to as Lapkins.

These high quality, very finely woven light/medium weight double damask linen napkins feature an attractive and abundant, yet subtle design that was hard to capture on camera.  The centers are decorated with a fancy roses, vine and foliage pattern that highlights a beautiful large script monogram.  Most of the surrounding field is effusively patterned with a similar roses motif, combined with scrolls, wreaths, foliage, more fancy designs and elaborate border.  A true cornucopia of delight, subtly woven into the damask.  *Please note that the fourth and fifth images above were taken with a flash to better show the damask pattern.

The very fine, slightly creamy white linen is exceptionally smooth and soft to the touch, with wonderful body and drape.

A large monogram, that we have been unable to decipher, decorates center field.  It is beautifully hand executed in a very French style fancy padded satin stitch, with lots of detail, flourishes and curlicues. The mono is just as beautiful on the reverse as the front.  See last image for a magnified view.

The napkins are finely finished with very narrow, flat, turned under side hems that also appear to be hand done.

This set of eight antique white double damask linen lapkins are in very nice estate condition.  When acquired they were clean and pressed, so I have not re-laundered.  However they were apparently not pre-treated before laundering, as close examination of each individual napkin, in bright direct light, revealed some small, diffused, pale, very light yellowish areas, (which we feel would resolve with treatment/soak) as well as some tiny, light specks, several of which appear to be naturally occurring/commonly found in in antique woven linen/flax textiles.  All fairly inconsequential in our opinion and/or likely easily resolvable with a simple linen treatment of your choice and gentle soak or wash.   Most significant:   on one napkin we found a single, minor, very small, old and well done repair.  It is straight and very narrow, apx. ½ - ¾ inch in length, very near an edge.  Also found -two tiny holes; a minute pin hole size to one napkin and a slightly larger, apx. very sharp pencil point size, to a second.  While this group may not be absolutely flawless by a perfectionist’s standard, an easy soak, plus a couple of stitches would easily remedy the few minor issues.

All the napkins feature the beautiful, matching hand worked monograms and hems; clean, pressed and ready to be used with your favorite tablecloth for that special occasion, dinner or banquet.

An exceptional and harder to find matching set of high quality, beautifully monogrammed 19th century, antique, large, over size napkins.            Linens, Textiles, France
