Huge Antique Fine Damask Linen Banquet Tablecloth, 156 x 79 inches + Large Matching 28 inch Lapkins Napkins

Material:  Damask Linen
Color:  Creamy white
Age:  Victorian ~ c. 1860s - 1890s
Size:  Tablecloth Length ~ 156 inches, Width ~ 79 inches
         Napkins ~ apx. 28 x 28 inches square
Monogram:  K or H, tablecloth mono apx. 5 x 4 inches, napkin mono apx. 2 x ½ inches
Quantity:  1 Set (1 tablecloth & 8 napkins)

A very fine, exceptionally large antique banquet size tablecloth measuring 156 inches; an amazing 13 feet long, and 79 inches; more than 6 & ½ feet wide.  Accompanying the cloth are eight matching very large, oversize napkins; each measuring 28 inches square and often referred to as lapkins, due to their generous size.

The very high quality, smooth, silky and finely woven creamy white linen features a wonderful fancy double damask pattern typical of the effusive and elaborate Victorian era, mid - last quarter of the 19th century. The formal design incorporates rose garlands, floral sprays, bows, ribbons, cornucopias, Grecian urns, esprit dots, cartouches, vignettes and elaborate flourishes, bordered with a period stylized Greek Key type motif. A true visual and tactile delight!  Please note that a camera flash was used in some of the above images to better show the damask pattern design.

Each piece is additionally adorned with a single, lovely hand executed, intricate silky padded stitched monogram in the old Germanic style, that appears to be a K, or H, perhaps.  Please see the 8th image for a larger view.  A single monogram is quite unique to find on an antique textile of this era, as multiple initials are more commonly seen.

The tablecloth, as well as the napkins, have two natural selvage sides and two hemmed sides.  The hems are very well executed; narrow, flat, smooth and appear to have been done on an early sewing machine, possibly a treadle model.

A true trousseau, or dowry quality meant to last for generations, this set has stood the test of time quite well and remains in exceptionally nice antique estate condition.  When acquired the linens showed some storage related marks along fold lines, etc., so all pieces were carefully hand washed and pressed by me, and are now fresh, clean and ready to be used and enjoyed.  I do not use starch, preferring rather to press when the linen is still slightly damp, which leaves a smooth, yet crisp finish.

Due to personal preferences, as well as a temperamental washing machine that occasionally leaves strange black marks on light colored fabrics, I soak / wash all vintage and antique linens by hand.  Needless to say, this huge tablecloth, as well as the eight giant napkins proved quite a challenge!  Since I lack any container large enough to soak and hand wash all these huge linen pieces together, at one time, (which subsequently required three separate batches) whilst everything is clean and white, there is a very subtle color variation between the napkins washed in two separate batches and the table cloth.  This is extremely minor and easily resolved upon first combined wash.  See close up of tablecloth and napkin monograms, (image #8) where possibly you can detect the subtle difference I am describing.

Careful examination of the tablecloth revealed only a few noteworthy items.  As expected and perfectly typical of the period, laundry tags or labels, which would have indicated ownership and/or inventory information, were likely attached at several corners of the cloth during the past 100 plus years.  In fact a small, ½ inch square white cloth tag/label still remains attached at one corner edge, along with a hint of a small stamped, or written mark.  Directly next to this cloth tag are several small holes where a previous tag was likely sewn, embroidered, or otherwise affixed, and similar pin size thread holes can be found on other corners, indicating marks, letters, tags or labels were likely previously sewn there, as well. Please see last image where you can view a magnified and extremely sharpened photo, that really makes the aforementioned appear worse than actual, but we wanted to provide a very detailed image to accompany the above description.  Obviously linens were valuable and treasured items in Victorian times, and as such, owners wanted to insure they could be easily identified, so as previously mentioned, marks, labels, tags, etc., or the remains of said items, are common to find on antique linens and textiles.

The napkins also remain in similar very nice condition, with only one tiny pin hole near an edge noted, and one small area of weakness just inside the selvage, so if desired a reinforcement could be accomplished quite easily and remain virtually undetectable;  fairly minor and actually not noted at all in first inspection. Otherwise, I am happy to report that the fine linen damask appears strong and robust throughout the set.
Both the tablecloth and napkins present very clean and bright, with possibly the faintest hint of storage related marks on a few old fold lines remaining evident, and a few pale, tiny, minute specks here or there, if scrutinized intensely.  Certainly resolvable with future washings.

Exceptionally fine quality, hard to find large banquet size antique Victorian damask linen tablecloth, with matching lapkins; all with a rare and desirable single monogram.
