Fine Large Early 19th Century Antique French Whitework Linen Handkerchief ~ Divine Embroidery & Monogram
Fine Large Early 19th Century Antique French Whitework Linen Handkerchief ~ Divine Embroidery & Monogram
Fine Large Early 19th Century Antique French Whitework Linen Handkerchief ~ Divine Embroidery & Monogram

Material:  Linen Batiste

Color:  White

Monogram:  M P

Size:  17 & 1/2 inches square

Quantity:  1

A divine large antique whitework linen batiste handkerchief, likely French and dating to apx. the first half of the 19th century, c. 1820 - 1850.

t is completely hand stitched, with a beautiful hand embroidered raised Greek Key type motif, accented with abundant seed stitches surrounding the entire perimeter.  A very fancy and finely executed monogram, featuring a raised satin stitch, at lower right corner.

This sheer white batiste handkerchief is in truly outstanding antique estate condition.  (Note:  Color is best shown in the first image)  I find no stains, spots, rips, tears, snags, distress, weakness, missing stitches or any other problems.  When acquired the hanky was quite darkened from age, but after a gentle soak and press it appears perfectly white and in overall amazingly fine condition, especially for a textile that is about two hundred years old.

Although I cannot now recall the source, I previously read that in the 18th and early 19th centuries handkerchiefs were used mainly by men, however another source indicates women who had access to these rare luxuries, mainly from wealthy families, used hankies much like fans of the period were, for flirting and showing off graceful hands.

Certainly an interesting, excellent condition example that would make a very fine addition to  a discrimination hankie, or historic textile collection.
