A nice vintage pinch pleated and fully lined drapery panel, constructed from desirable old Indian Head fabric yardage in a hard to find French Country Blue scenic Toile.
The charming Toile de Jouy pattern design features vignettes of frolicking couples dancing and playing in a French country manor, or chateau park like setting, complete with gazebos, fountains, bridges, ducks, trees and flowering vines. The cream y white vignettes, resembling finely engraved etchings, are beautifully highlighted on what I will call a French country, or Wedgwood blue ground.
Research indicates that the Indian Head brand label has been known since the 1820's. Sanforized, which guarantees the fabric will not shrink more than 1%, began appearing on yardage selvage in 1949, but was apparently dropped by 1952, effectively dating this particular fabric to that brief time period.
Indian Head cotton was designed to mimic linen and one familiar company slogan was;
use it instead of linen.
By all reports the fabric was highly regarded and extremely popular.
The vintage Toile drapery panel offered here is a very nice medium weight and it certainly does look and feel like linen. It is well made and was very nicely hand hemmed. The lining has also been attached to the drape entirely with hand stitching. One drapery hook remains attached.
The panel is in very nice condition. The drape was obviously laundered prior to storage, however after many years of being packed away it really needs to be laundered prior to use, as there is some minor soiling and light age related yellowing at a fold line. The lining does show some light water marks and evidence of moisture exposure from use on a window, however I think this will lighten/disappear with a good soak/wash. The drape and the lining are both structurally very sound, with no holes, tears, or rips. The fabric is strong, with no evidence of any stress, deterioration or other problems. The toile does not appear to be sun faded.
If this formal style of drape is not required the stitching can be removed from the pleats, thereby opening up the panel to a generous 89 x 69 inches, which could then be used as a larger curtain via rings, or a tablecloth, furniture cover, or for a myriad of other projects.
This nice old vintage drapery panel, along with a large 26 yard bolt of identical, matching fabric, was discovered in an old Portland, Oregon estate. The yardage is also offered for sale here on our site, please see link on the left side of this page.
PLEASE NOTE:
the identifying marks noted above on selvage were taken from the matching uncut bolt fabric. Also, since this drapery panel has been previously laundered it no longer retains the original glazing, as does the fabric that remains uncut on bolt, otherwise the panel remains a very close match to yardage.
This type of high quality Indian Head fabric is considered an obsolete, lost yard good, as it is no longer made and only available when vintage pieces or yardage is discovered in old fabric stores, warehouses, estates, etc. Solid colors can be found with some searching, but prints like this Toile, so reminiscent of the wonderful antique French Toile de Jouy, Rouen and Nantes, make this large bolt a rare find. The fabric is well suited and often used for all kinds of decorating and design applications, including window accents, such as drapes, valances, curtains, and swags, as well as bedding and upholstery like pillows, bed skirts, duvet covers, slipcovers, etc.
