Antique French metallic lace boudoir, vanity and sewing items were made in France
during the 1800 and 1900's, with the height of popularity around the turn of the
century through the Edwardian and Roaring 20's eras. These articles are becoming
somewhat scarce, so we are always happy to find nice period examples.
This particular rather large size frame is elaborately decorated with at least four
different types of antique metallic lace and passementerie trims, on an attractive
pink ground. Pretty multi-color silk ribbon rosettes and fine bobbin lace surround
the center picture area.
The frame is in very nice antique estate condition. Careful inspection revealed no
rips, tears, or other type of noted damage to either the lace or ribbon work. Minor,
minor wear to outside edge trim. Very small amount of loss to cardboard backing,
however picture can still be easily inserted and held securely.
The rosette ribbonwork remains quite vibrant. Bobbin lace is a creamy off white.
Metallic lame lace has mellowed to a rich dark gold.
This type of frame is often
displayed on a vanity, dressing table or night stand, etc. It can be used either
horizontally or vertically, however if the frame is hung on a wall there is only
a small opening in the backing board for the vertical application. (use a flat style
picture hanging hook) Horizontal hanging will require another small opening in the
backing board.
Frames are one of the harder to find antique French lace vanity boudoir
items and this one is quite attractive, ornate and well made. A very feminine item,
perfect for French chateau decor.
