I love little antique vanity jars...the smaller the better, as far as I'm concerned! Unfortunately, those made completely from sterling silver, versus the more commonly found sterling lid with a crystal base, are really quite hard to find, especially in pairs, so we are very pleased to offer this charming set of matching all silver pots.
They were made in London England, during the Edwardian era, c. 1908 -
09, by William Amaziah Ellwick, who registered his first mark in 1880 and assayed silver in both London and Birmingham. Each jar is fully hallmarked on lid, as well as body.
They feature lovely gold washed vermeil interiors, and fancy period script monograms to lids.
These diminutive dresser jars were likely used for cosmetics, cream, lotion, vaseline, and powder, etc,.
They are sometimes also referred to as mini or miniature patch, or trinket boxes.
The jars are quite small; measurements are listed above, plus we included a US quarter in the first image, for size comparison.
They are in very nice antique estate condition, with no significant issues or problems, however the larger one does have a couple of extremely tiny edge dings. One is visible just below makers mark in the first two images. Second top edge ping is not visible in the images, but similar, very small size, plus there is one edge bump to base; see last image; apx 8:00 o’clock position. The smaller round box has an extremely tiny ping to side. The lift off lids fit snugly.
After taking the pictures I realized that one jar still retained some residual face powder residue, which I subsequently removed, so both are now bright and shiny clean, inside and out.
Really a very pretty, high quality, all sterling silver antique pair of English boudoir, vanity, dressing table accessories.
