A beautiful period lace, silk satin and ribbon rosette boudoir bandeau ~ breakfast, morning, leisure or lounge cap, c. 1917 -
1920's.
This band style of headpiece was first seen in the late teens and became very popular during the Flapper Era / Jazz Age.
Multiple layers of beautiful robin egg blue ruche silk satin ribbon form the headdress body, with fine long matching silk ribbon ties. The Point de Champ ecru or off white tulle is embellished with graceful floral motif on a spotted ground, similar to French Lille embroidered net lace. Three silk ribbon rosettes and other passementerie trims adorn front center.
This elegant boudoir bandeau is in exceptionally nice estate condition. I suspect it was never worn, used or laundered and it was obviously cherished and carefully stored. Careful examination revealed no rips, tears, holes, distress, etc. Neither the silk or the lace shows signs of weakness or other issues.
The silk satin ribbon ties do show a few, very small, pale age/storage related discolorations, (not rust) that I believe would completely disappear with a gentle soak.
Several of our reference materials note that by 1910 boudoir ~ breakfast hats had become so popular that they were being worn at other times of the day, including evening, these then being called theater caps. Apparently little differentiated the two, except theater caps were possibly somewhat fancier, or with more delicate lace, etc. All have become very collectible.
The bandeau style flapper era headpieces are becoming quite difficult to find, especially fine condition, elaborate examples like this attractive lacy confection.
