This fine antique large gentleman's nightshirt dates to apx. the last quarter of the 19th century, 1875 -
1890's and matches the ladies night gown we have listed separately and shown for reference in the last image. (
Sorry, matching ladies nightgown sold 3/2012
.
)
The gown has a Scottish provenance; purchased directly from the granddaughter, whose grandparents immigrated from Scotland and settled in the Pacific Northwest.
According to the family this nightshirt belonged to emigre grandfather and judging by the size, I can only surmise this is a definite possibility. Please see measurement details above. Of course nightwear of the period was rather full, but this night shirt is quite large, long and very voluminous. I am 5', 5” and when I hold this gown up to my shoulders it appears it would drag on the ground if worn, so the wearer of this garment was probably about six feet tall. And 88 inches of hem circumference is a
lot
of fullness; almost two and a half yards of fabric. Additionally, compared to grandmas matching night dress, this garment is substantially larger.
Most frequently found examples of men's and women's night wear of the period is quite plain and utilitarian. This night shirt, however, is profusely decorated with lots of frilly, two inch wide, Broderie Anglaise whitework embroidery lace at collar, placket and wrist. Decorative stitching accents many, many rows of fine pin-
tucking at yoke. Long, full, generous sleeves, gathered at wrist with lots of lace. One original linen covered button at neck.
Constructed of very fine, high quality, medium to heavier weight cotton. A meticulously finished and very well made period gents nightshirt.
This nightshirt is in excellent antique estate condition. It was obviously treasured and well cared for. I find no rips, tears, snags, breaks, stains, spots, or other problems of any kind to either the lace or fabric; only one tiny half inch narrow gray line at inside neck back, that I believe is remnant of an early laundry mark.
The shirt is freshly laundered and pressed. Actual color is quite white, however please note that I slightly darkened a few of the images above to better show detail.
A very fancy, high quality, well made antique garment.
