Age:  19th Century, 1820 - 1850
Quantity:  1

Divine antique 19th century Napoleon III / Victorian era embroidered whitework handkerchief, featuring a crown or coronet monogram, indicating the textile belonged to a royal, or member of the nobility.
The style of couronne suggests a peer with the rank of a  Marquis / Marquess.  Interestingly, this example is additionally monogrammed Clara, so Lady Clara would therefore have been a Marchioness, which ranks above a Countess, but below a Duchess.  It is really quite rare and rather hard to find historic antique textiles that were clearly established possessions of aristocratic noble females.
The handkerchief has been beautifully embroidered around the perimeter with a minimalist, but very intricate and detailed pattern design including a three leaf and pearl motif similar to the decoration on the heraldic crown monogram, along with multi petal flowers and scrolls.
The scrolls are embroidered with the most minute seed stitches. Delicate needle lace is accented with buttonhole stitch.  The fine diaphanous lawn hanky was then finished all around with perfectly embroidered satin stitch scallops.
The fine seed stitches, well executed buttonhole work and perfect satin stitching is similar in quality and density to the best Appenzell embroidery.
Antique textiles embroidered with royal or noble monograms are certainly somewhat scare and as mentioned previously, examples that can be definitively established for women of the aristocracy are even more unusual, so while this 150+ year of handkerchief is not perfect, we are extremely pleased to present it.
The handkerchief was absolutely brown and dingy when acquired, so it was gently washed and carefully pressed, surviving both very well while suffering no additional problems and now appears very clean and bright, with no noted stains, spots, specks, etc.
While the hanky is in quite good antique estate condition, especially considering age, there are three noteworthy mentions.
First, there are a number of small holes, the largest measuring apx. 3 millimeters; sprinkled mainly around the outer perimeter, but some to center area as well.
Second, there are also some small areas where the weave is not as even, which is not unusual or unexpected on very old hand loomed textiles.  The  monogrammed corner is most affected. with a couple of actual separations to the lawn near perimeter, in this area as well, the most significant of which is apx. one half inch in length and located next to one of the round petal flowers at hanky edge.  See image #3, directly under the “
C” in Clara and at approximately the 4 o’clock position, by flower at hankie edge.
Third, two small areas show very old, well done period repairs, which are visible in several of the images and shown enlarged in the last image.  See apx. 5 o’clock and 7 o’clock positions at lower edge of picture, plus see upper image for closer view of some of the aforementioned small holes.
Please keep in mind that this wonderful old, high quality fabric is extremely fine and sheer, virtually translucent, so photographing using very high magnification on a dark back ground rather distorts things, making the woven fabric appear strange/thin, for example, when in fact most remains amazingly fine.
In summary, while the lawn is extremely fine and diaphanous, and there are some areas showing age as described and photographed, the handkerchief survived washing and pressing without any evidence that said actions caused any further issues.  In fact the fabric feels quite strong and appears stable, so while I would not suggest using the textile for its originally intended purpose (to blow your nose!) you need not fear that the textile is so delicate it is going to quickly deteriorate and I think it could be carefully carried for a special occasion without undue anxiety.  With general care and intelligent consideration, which a significant and very special antique textile such as this truly deserves, it should last another 150 years.
Certainly a worthy candidate for even the most discriminated antique textile or vintage clothing collection.
