TEXTILES & LINENS > OTHER LINENS & LACE

Material:  Nipis de Pina
Color:  Cream
Size:  14.50 inches square
Age:  19th century, later 1800s
Origin:  Manila, Philippines
Quantity:  1

A hard to find and rather rare antique example of a Calado hand embroidered handkerchief, executed in the traditional Filipino style on whisper light, sheer and diaphanous hand woven nipis de pina, which at the time was considered by experts to be the finest cloth in the world.  Pina cloth was woven from various materials, including cotton, silk and linen to list a few, and I believe this textile is linen, with silk embroidery.
This antique handkerchief was done in a traditional design, so it was likely not made for tourists or export to foreign markets, but rather intended for the upper echelon of Filipino society.  Such examples are unusual to find today outside of important museums, such as the Textile Museum in St. Gallen, Switzerland, the Victorian and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan in New York.
Even more amazing, this antique handkerchief, made in 19th century Manila, Philippines, appears to have never been used or laundered.  It was obviously a cherished and treasured keepsake, lovingly stored and carefully preserved for apx. the past 125 years.
This textile features all of the traditional Manila embroidery markers, including the lighter silk thread used by the highly skilled needleworker for the delicate embroidered floral motif, lots of Calado open work, (similar to that found on Swiss Appenzell embroidery) beautifully finished scalloped edges and large oval vignettes highlighting a centered design that may be a monogram, possibly the initial M?  Additionally, the fine, virtually transparent pina cloth is exactly what would have been used during the time period for a high quality textile such as this kerchief, which could possibly also be utilized as a small fichu.
As previously mentioned the hanky appears to be unused and remains in excellent antique estate condition, with no noted stains, specks, marks, tears, holes, etc.  If scrutinized very closely a few very small irregularities in the cloth can be detected, however I believe these are intrinsic to the hand woven process of the day, so likely original to the piece and subsequently should not diminish the desirability of this textile whatsoever.
This exceptional antique embroidered hankie, notable for rarity, high quality, excellent execution, fine overall design and outstanding condition, would make a divine special occasion memento ie; wedding, bridal, engagement, christening, confirmation, birthday, holiday, anniversary, etc., as well as a wonderful addition to even the most discriminated handkerchief, antique textile, or vintage clothing collection.
