Material:  Linen Batiste
Color:  White
Size:  16.50 inches x 16 inches
Age:  1870 - 1890s
Origin:  French, France
Quantity:  1

A divine large antique French whitework embroidery handkerchief, dating to the later 19th century Victorian era, c. 1870 - 1890s.
Completely hand stitched on diaphanous linen batiste by a very talented needleworker, this antique textile features an intricate and beautifully executed embroidered shamrock, (or clover) and vine motif surrounding the entire perimeter.
Each corner is further embellished with additional shamrock flourishes.  One corner also features a fancy and finely executed two letter monogram that I believe may be " F T ".  The initials were worked in a padded satin stitch, accented with the tiniest seed stitches in an ornate design that also cleverly incorporates the playful shamrock motif.
This sheer, clean, pressed white handkerchief is in exceptionally nice antique estate condition, with no noted rips, tears, or missing stitches, etc.  When placed flat on a dark background there are a few small areas where the weave of the textile appears subtly different, see extremely magnified image # 9, second to the last picture.   This is not noticeable when held to the light for example, so may just be due to the sheerness of this light, diaphanous fabric.  Though the fabric is wonderfully delicate and almost transparent, it remains very strong and sturdy, with no noted integrity issues.
Certainly an attractive, very nice condition period example that would make a wonderful special occasion memento, ie; wedding, bridal, engagement, christening, confirmation, birthday, holiday, anniversary, etc., as well as a fine addition to  a discrimination hankie, vintage clothing, or historic textiles collection.

Although I cannot now recall the source, I previously read that in the 18th and early 19th centuries handkerchiefs were used mainly by men.  Women who did have access to these rare luxuries, mainly from wealthy families, utilized hankys much like fans of the period, for flirting and showing off their graceful hands.

Please Note:  This handkerchief was acquired from an important European estate along with two additionally hankies featuring the same monogram, with similar style, condition and age; see our other listings for #2 and #3.
