A divine pair of child's Berlin Woolwork slippers dating to the early Victorian era, apx. 1840's.
Berlin wool work, a type of decorative needlepoint on canvas, sometimes also referred to as embroidery, was a popular pastime for Victorian ladies.
After completion of the wool uppers they would have been taken to a shoemaker to be joined with soles and then finished with linings, trims, etc.
Patterns for slippers and other types of needlepoint projects were available in periodicals, such as Godey's Lady's Book and Peterson's Magazine and other similar fashion or needlework related issues.
These darling children's house shoes are formed of multicolor geometric motif hand made woolwork uppers, with leather soles.  The interior footbeds are lined with hand quilted, lightly padded gold silk, throats are edged with sage green trim and vamps are finished with pretty silk ribbon bows.   Measuring only 5 & ¾ inches in length they are quite tiny and small, and very charming.
This pair of Victorian slippers are in exceptionally nice antique estate condition.  The woolwork needlepoint presents very well, with good color retention and only two tiny stitches noted missing. Leather soles and wool uppers remain firmly attached.  Stitching, trims, bows, linings, etc., appear in similar sound condition.  The quilted silk interior lining is very clean and nice, with only one very tiny tear at side, mid shoe.  Some subtle discoloration here and there to trim at throat; (around the opening to the shoes) possibly slight color transfer from the dark red wool yarn.  The soles of the shoes remain very nice;  the leather is not dry or brittle and only very slight scuffing evident.  It is really hard to discern if these slippers were ever even worn, as the aforementioned scuffing is so minor it could be just 170 plus years of storage related wear.

Definitely an exceptional pair of Victorian slippers;  presently somewhat hard to find even similar adult examples and truly quite rare to find similar condition shoes for a toddler or young child.  Could be used for a larger doll.  PLEASE NOTE:  First 2 images slightly darker than actual.
